In a tarana, the words of a bandish are replaced by syllables which may sometimes have no meaning and have great value in terms of rhythm tempo and raga rendition. On the concert stage, tarana is performed both as part of the rendition of khayal and also as an independent item. This album features Rajan and Sajan Mishra with a rare and old bandish in Bhairav, one of the six original ragas of Hindustani music. The syllables use the bols of the tabla and pakhawaj and are set to the ancient Sulfakta tala. Other taranas are based on raga Gurjari Todi, raga Jaunpuri, raga Hamsadhwani and raga Jaijaiwanti |
