One of the most popular of Hindustani classical ragas, the royal raga Darbari, is said to be one of Tansen's creations. Being a musician in emperor Akbar's court, the great musician often rendered this raga in the royal court or 'darbar' and hence it came to be known as 'Darbari' or Darbari Kanhara'. This enchanting raga has interesting musical patterns. Being a night raga, the sampurna (seven) notes in the raga are arranged such as to immediately bring in the mood of the night sky and its mystical silence. Interestingly, the notes in this raga are a semitone lower than the next, lending it an extremely distinctive character. This popular raga is rendered in brilliant vocals and instrumental by timeless legends Pandit Jasraj, Dr. Ustad Bismillah Khan, Pandit Rajan & Sajan Mishra and Ustad Shujaat Husain Khan. |
